257: The Self-Healing Mind - the Impact of Self-Care on Mental Health

On Air with Ella - podcast episode 257

RETHINKING MENTAL HEALTH

Gregory Scott Brown, MD, is an integrative psychiatrist and author of The Self-Healing Mind: An Essential Five-Step Practice to Overcoming Anxiety and Depression and Revitalizing Your Life (June 2022). Brown believes having “open and honest conversations” about mental health can help us fight the stigma.

Dr. Brown’s integrative approach utilizes a combination of conventional treatments (medication and psychotherapy) with what he calls the Five Pillars of Self-Care: breathing mindfully, sleep, spirituality, nutrition, and movement.

Many of us will never meet the diagnostic criteria for [mental illness], but may still live with unhappiness, loneliness, disconnection, and a lack of purpose. These conditions can influence the quality of our lives just as much as a diagnosed mental illness. They all but ensure we are not living our best lives.
