Embracing Identity Shifts for Personal Transformation: A Guide to Sustainable Change


As we approach the New Year, many of us are tempted to set resolutions in hopes of becoming better versions of ourselves. However, Ella challenges the traditional notion of New Year's resolutions. Instead, Ella advocates for a more compassionate and holistic approach to self-improvement, focusing on identity shifting and aligning actions with our true selves.


Why Resolutions Fail


Unrealistic Expectations: Resolutions often set high expectations that are difficult to achieve, leading to feelings of failure.


Lack of Alignment: Many resolutions are based on societal "should" not "will," causing a disconnect between what we know we want and what we are actually doing.


Shifting Focus to Identity


Ella introduces the concept of identity shifting, which is about evolving our self-perception rather than discarding who we are. This approach emphasizes aligning our actions with our desired identity and the energy we want to carry into the upcoming year.


Understanding Identity Shifting


We must first recognize that we are not defined by our past or current circumstances. We have the power to shape our identities and how we show up in the world. We can work to convince our subconscious mind to align with the person we aspire to be, breaking free from limiting beliefs and behaviors.

Exploratory Questions for Identity Shifting


To facilitate the process of identity shifting, Ella presents three exploratory questions designed to help us reflect on our desired identity and the actions that support it.

1. Who Do I Want to Be?


Envision your future self and reflect on the kind of person you want to become.


  • Imagine yourself five years from now - or 35 years from now. What qualities do you possess? What achievements have you accomplished?

  • Craft a eulogy that captures the essence of the life you wish to lead. This exercise helps clarify your core values and desired legacy.


2. What Actions Reflect My Desired Identity?


Think about the daily actions and choices that align with your envisioned identity. What does a person embodying your desired identity do, say, think, express?



  • Identify specific behaviors that align with your desired identity.

  • Identify behaviors that do not support your transformation.



3. Who is Shaping My Identity?


  • Who in your life is supporting the YOU you want to be?

  • Who isn't?
